Recognizing “The Addiction of Gambling”

Numerous people have heard of men and women who are addicted to gambling, but not everyone knows what to do in order to be able to help those affected with the addiction. We need to accept the fact that not many of us would know why so and so is addicted to gambling, and if we don’t understand the reasons of how gambling turns itself into an addiction, we won’t be able to help our loved ones, in fighting this disease.

There are various reasons which can cause people to get addicted to gambling. Pretty much like alcoholics, those addicted to gambling also have various reasons which triggered them into this addiction. The reasons could vary from marital problem to a stressful job.

In the initial stages of the “new venture” of gambling the gamblers feel completely in control and also go the extent of saying that he/she holds the reigns and can pull the cord whenever “HE/SHE WISHES”.

Unfortunately, they soon come to realize that they never feel like pulling the cord and putting a stop to this menace of gambling. Hours changed into days and days changed into weeks, weeks changed to month and months to years and they get more and more addicted to gambling without knowing when it actually changed from a hobby into an addiction.

It is very important to be able to recognize when the game of gambling needs to be stopped. There is always a very thin line between, when gambling remains a game and when it changes into an addiction. If you see yourself or your loved ones increasing their no. of visits to the casino, that is when we need to intervene and “nip the problem in the bud”.

Compulsive visits to the casino and the ATM and very obvious signs of the growing addiction. Most of the gamblers may argue saying that they don’t play for money. This may be true in some cases where initially people just go for the fun of the game and play online gambling games which sometimes don’t involve money. These are games which are actually meant to be just  fun.

But over a period of time we see that people who get addicted to these non-money games have a change in their thought process and think of trying the same games or similar games with money betting. In the beginning they might go once in a while, but over a period of time their visits become very frequent and those “once in a while visits” change into continuous sessions at the casinos or at the websites offering online gambling games.

If we have come across any of the initial symptoms of the growing addiction for gambling in ourselves or in the habits of our loved ones, it is better to start checking the problem before it becomes a compulsive addiction. Often we have heard that timely intervention has been very successful in stopping such an addiction before it actually becomes extremely tough to deal with.
